Alex Stewart: “Our aim is to get back into the Welsh League”

Newport YMCA manager Alex Stewart looked ahead to Saturdays JD Welsh Cup clash with local rivals Caerleon by answering a few questions on the predicament the club finds itself in and what the clubs overall aims are for the season.

Newport YMCA were one of five teams who were relegated last season, with this Saturdays opponents perilously close to the drop last year too, surviving by a meagre six points. YMCA’s  relegation saw them relegated to Division 1 of the Gwent County Leagues, where they currently sit fifth, with three wins and one defeat.

“It was a real blow being relegated from the Welsh Football League, we almost folded but senior members put the effort in to save and rescue the club from the position it was in”.

Stewart’s first plan of action was to bring in Marc Ingles, who alongside Stewart had Welsh League experience during their playing careers, which will come to help them as they take on management. Despite being Welsh Cup semi-finalists in 2013, the main aim this year is clearly one of promotion.

“Our aim is to get back into the Welsh League as soon as possible and to make the club stable off the pitch.”

Stewart stressed the importance of captain Daniel Cueto who has led the line for the Newport outfit since 2013, after years away with Caerleon, Llanwern and Malpas United.

“He leads by example, on and off the pitch with his commitment, passion and with his goal scoring.”

Despite the league being the priority for this season, Newport YMCA are not playing the fixture down. With Alex Stewart

“A Welsh Cup game is a big occasion for us, with it being a home tie and the added bonus of it being against our local rivals Caerleon”

With numerous players crossing borders, playing for both sides, many of the players will know one another which will add a competitive feel to the game.
