Nathaniel Car Sales Welsh League Division 1 – Friday 21st October 2016

Afan Lido 1 – 1 Goytre United

Afan Lido welcomed local rivals Goytre United to the Marston’s Stadium on Friday evening on the back of 5 wins in a row in all competitions scoring 20 goals in the process.

Goytre on the other hand went into the game having not won in the league since September 10th. The Lido were without key player Chris Hartland, although named as a substitute, he was injured. Goytre United were without ex – Swansea City and Carmarthen Town centre back Steven Berry.

The opening minutes of the game centred in the midfield areas with both teams moving the ball well through midfield into the channels.

The best chance came from Afan Lido in the 7th minute when after a flowing move in midfield Jordan Edwards found himself through on goal and saw hi finish hit the bottom of the post, rolled across the goal and to safety.

Goytre were always a threat through the pacey Adam Orme upfront and in the 15th minute Ryan Griffiths cut inside from the right and his shot was deflected by Carl Evans and Lido keeper was forced to save low to his left.

The 200 plus crowd were being entertained by an end to end game, next Lido came close, good footwork by Elliot Thomas got himself past 2 Goytre defenders but the Welsh Futsal internationals’ shot was hit straight at keeper Luke Martin.

The Lido fans did not have to long for the opening goal. Five minutes before half time a swift attacking move down the left found Sacha Walters running in on goal, Goytre centre back Dale Griffiths lunged for the ball taking the ball and bringing down Walters also, however referee Harry Hendricks pointed immediately to the spot. Jordan Edwards made it 1-0 to the Lido.

A reshuffle for Goytre at half time saw giant striker Liam Griffiths coming onto the pitch and a new 4-4-2 formation pushed Lido back in the opening stages of the second half. After 56 minutes the game was level. More good work in midfield by Warren Hudson found Adam Orme who laid the ball off to Dylan Blain whose controlled shot from 20 yards found the bottom left corner. This was Blain’s first goal for Goytre United after his summer arrival.

With the game now stretched both teams pushed for the win with the better chances falling to Afan Lido.

Just after the hour a cross by Carlos Indjai was volleyed over from 4 yards by Jordan Edwards and in the final 10 minutes an Elliot Thomas cross was again volleyed over, this time by Ben Thomas when it seemed easier to score.

In reflection both teams would be happy with a point against their local rival and both showed good signs in their play to have a positive outlook for the rest of the season.
