Barry captain James Saddler ‘proud’ of Town

He’s played over 200 games for Barry Town and 100 of those have been as captain of the Vale based side, with multiple promotions on his resume as captain, he will now be able to add cup finalist after Barry’s 1-0 midweek win over Carmarthen Town in the League Cup.

We caught up with club captain who is adored by players, staff and fans alike of the club on what it means to him to guide his side to the final and how the club will approach the fixture.

As captain of the club, how does it feel to know Barry will be playing in a cup-final next year?

It’s a brilliant feeling and I’m very proud. The boys have been working hard all season and it’s nice to be rewarded with a cup final. We will celebrate the victory tonight and look forward to the final in January, but will quickly turn our focus back to the league with our next fixture.

After disappointment in the Welsh Cup on Saturday, how did the boys bounce back tonight?

We’ve had big tests both on and off the pitch in recent years and I believe we showed our mental toughness and character tonight. It would’ve been easy for us to crumble, especially against a competitive team from the league above, but the team showed real grit and determination to put in a great all-round team performance.

You find out who you get next week, who would you prefer to face?

I have no preference. TNS and GAP Connahs Quay are both very strong teams and we’ll have to be at our best no matter who we play. Cup finals are always special occasions when anything can happen.

You’ve been captain for some time now, where does this rank as your time as a player here?

I’ve been lucky enough to play in very successful Barry teams in recent years, including winning back-to-back promotions in 2013/14 & 2014/15 as well as reaching the Welsh Cup Semi-Final in 2012/13. I’d say that this is certainly up there with those and if we win the final then it will probably go to the top! As a player, you want to be successful and reaching cup finals is certainly a good measure of success.

A cracking free-kick by Jordan Cotterill, did you think he had it in him to score that?

As much as I’d like to roast Jordan here, I have to say that he’s got that ability in him. He has scored several good free-kicks in recent season but I think tonight’s was one of his best!

A crowd of about 500 tonight, how important are the vocal Jenner Park faithful to the club?

Another brilliant turnout…and on a wet & windy Tuesday night as well! The fans have been brilliant over the years both on and off the pitch. The support shown during games is incredible and it’s nice for the fans to be rewarded with victories and now a cup final.
