Why a win over Caernarfon Town in the Welsh Cup could help Barry Town United in the long run?

Welsh Premier League

Barry Town United’s form has taken a dip of form late and after losing two successive matches in the Welsh Premier League, could a win over Caernarfon Town help them build momentum going into the Welsh Premier League?

Gavin Chesterfield’s side have lost to both Newtown and Cefn Druids over the last two weeks, but a win against Caernarfon could be exactly what they need to help them kick on in the league.

Barry have struggled away from home so far this season. Although, that being said, they did record historic wins over Bangor City and The New Saints on their travels.

But, on the whole, they have been inconsistent on their travels and they’ve struggled on occasions away from home this season.

Barry, however, certainly have players who can punish teams. Jordan Cotterill, who has recently returned from a long lay-off with injury, is a real talent but is yet to hit it off in the Welsh Premier League.

However, that does prove how hard it can be to adapt and the gulf in quality between the lower Welsh Leagues and the top level of Welsh football is clear to see.

They also have a goal-scoring gem in Kayne McLaggon, who was signed from Merthyr Town in the summer and he already has eight goals to his name in the Welsh Premier League following his move.

They have the players amongst their ranks to really inflict damage upon opposition, but the most important aspect for this Barry side, is to gain momentum and it is vitally important they stop dropping points away from home.

For their first season back in the Welsh Premier League, there are a lot of positives to take from the opening few months of the season, but there also areas which need improving.

In one of their most recent away games, away at Newtown, they were carved apart far too easily as they succumb to a 3-0 loss and this was most certainly a learning curve, and a harsh reality of how difficult the Welsh Premier League can prove to be.

Barry prize themselves in maintaining a fantastic defence, which has been shown through their rise through the Welsh Leagues, but it has come unstuck on occasions this season.

Saturday could be the perfect opportunity to breathe fresh life into their season. Caernarfon Town are a very well equipped outfit and are currently top of the Cymru Alliance, despite losing well regarded manager Iwan Williams to Llandudno Town in recent weeks.

If Barry can get a result, it would be a huge boost for them, especially with a tough schedule ahead for Chesterfield’s troops.

But if they do manage to win on Saturday, it is important they back it up, with games against Bangor City, Carmarthen Town and Prestatyn Town all to come before Christmas.

  1. I don’t think Barry’s circumstances are that different to most of the other WPL sides this season. So far it has been an interesting season as teams and results have not been consistent or predictable. It is the most competitive season I can remember. I will feel sorry for the two teams (and it looks like two will be) who get relegated at the end of the season.
The WPL this season appears to have matured into a competitive, professional league. Long may it continue!

  2. I fear someone will come in for McLaggon and without him we’ve got no one to score goals. Could be a very long second half of the season and I fear for us on Sunday
