Abergavenny Town promoted to Cymru South after South East title win

Abergavenny Town have won promotion to the Cymru South after they won the Ardal South East title.

Joseph Oguga’s 51st-minute goal was enough to secure a 1-0 win over Trethomas Bluebirds for the Pennies.

Rhys Tandy was dismissed for a second yellow card in the 81st minute but the Bluebirds failed to issue a response and even a draw would have been enough for them to secure the title.

The promotion was confirmed as earlier on in the day Abergavenny had been granted a Tier Two Licence by the Football Association of Wales’ First Instance Body.

Sean Wharton’s side in a 30-game season won 21 matches, drew three times, and tasted defeat just six times.

Abergavenny have only been in existence since 2014 and next year will be the highest level of football that the club will have played at since renaming from Govilon.

The town of Abergavenny last had a second-tier side in the men’s pyramid back in 1998 after one solitary season in the inaugural League of Wales.

The triumph is mirrored by the success of the Women’s team who won the Adran North title last month, taking their place in the Adran Premier.

Runners-up Abertillery Bluebirds will now contest the play-offs against the South West runner-up which is currently Pontyclun.

That match is due to be played in the coming weeks following the conclusion of the league season and will be played at a neutral venue.
