Holyhead Hotspur and Y Felinheli named league winners in last ever Welsh Alliance League:

Holyhead Hotspur and Y Felinheli have been crowned champions in the final season of the Welsh Alliance League.

The league’s 85-year history is coming to an end after structural changes to Wales’ pyramid system

In its final season, the two divisions were unable to be concluded on the pitch after the season was curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Holyhead claim their third Alliance League title after successes in 1998 and 2012.

The Hotspurs won all eight of their home games and dropped just eight points all season with one draw and two losses coming on the road.

On their official website, Holyhead Hotspur’s statement reacting to the announcement said: “Although we are of course as a club overjoyed at being crowned champions, football should be played and won on the pitch.

“However, in the current circumstances we totally understand and believe the FAW have come to the right decision.

“On behalf of everyone at Holyhead Hotspur, thank you for all your support this season and we look forward to seeing you next season.”

Before the season was suspended, Y Fellinheli were top of Division Two on the virtue of goal difference.

Both they and Penmaenmawr Phoenix were on 41 points, however, the Arfon based side had a better goal difference and had played three games less.

A short statement on social media from Y Felinheli said: “Fein were top of the table when COVID-19 brought the season to a halt in March and Felin had the most points per game at the time.

“So a fair decision although Llannefydd, who came second, might not agree.”

A decision on whether Holyhead and Felinheli will be rewarded for their success through the means of promotion has yet to be made.

An announcement will be made in due course on the outcome of this season.
