Llanrug United 4-0 Amlwch Town – Cup holders Llanrug United advance to next round with comfortable victory

Llanrug United continued their defence of the Mawddach Cup by putting a stop to Division Two highflyers Amlwch Town.

After suffering two consecutive defeats in Cup games, Llanrug made sure that Amlwch Town
would not make it three with a convincing 4-0 win over the Angelsey side.

Having been beaten by Barmouth and Dyffryn and Greenfield, seeing their hopes of a prospective quadruple being
quashed, Llanrug stayed on track to retain the Mawddach Cup.

The game started slowly, the first real action came when a long hopeful ball from midfielder Llion Jones saw Amlwch defender Ryan Jones clash with his own goalkeeper after trying to shield Joni Sadler off the ball. Unfortunately for the Amlwch defender, it looked a serious injury and he had to be replaced.

The game had it’s first goal when Llanrug took the lead in the 24th minute when the combination of Jones and
Sadler worked a treat, Jones knocked the ball into Sadler, Amlwch goalkeeper Harvey Williams
found himself in no man’s land and Sadler simply lobbed him and put Llanrug ahead.

United made it two three minutes later as right back James Phillips broke on the right flank and
exchanged passes with Aaron Hughes and Sadler before making his way into the box and
cutting inside to finish on his left foot.

The game became a bit of a midfield battle at times and a neithier team could find a way through, Amlwch’s frontman looking a frustrated figure as the ball wasn’t finding it’s way to him.

Llanrug made it three a couple of minutes before the half-time whistle, a long hopeful throw-in by Sadler found Aaron Hughes and an Amwlch defender bundled him over, it was a soft one to concede and Dylan Owen confidently stroked the ball past Williams and Llanrug led 3-0 at half-time.

The second stanza started similiarly to the first, neither side could find the finall ball and again it became a midfield battle. Llanrug killed the game off with arguably the best football of the game, James Phillps found Sion Phillips in the midfield area who got Aaron Hughes in a great position and he squared the ball to Llion Jones
who had made a fantastic run and finished well. It was a goal the midfielder very much deserved with
his work rate and willingness to create openings being rewarded.

Captain Mathew Phillips was replaced by Jason Deemer and later on United introduced youngster Sion Evans for his debut. He was followed by Robin Whiteside-Thomas who is gradually making his way
back after a nasty injury last season.

Amlwch made it hard for Llanrug at times but Llanrug were never in danger, Dylan Roberts having a much more comfortable afternoon in goal after shipping five last week. Llanrug will have known that the performance left a lot to be desired but they did not have to produce much as Amlwch posed no threat and will be looking to continue
their promotion push to the First Division of the Welsh Alliance.
