JD Welsh Cup Round Two side FC Penley fold from Welsh National League

FC Penley have become the second team to fold from the Welsh National League Division One this season, following Point of Ayr’s departure from the league in September after a poor start to their 2017/18 campaign.

The club announced it was withdrawing from the fourth tier of the Welsh Football Pyramid with the following tweet on 6th November:

Last season was a strong campaign from FC Penley  which saw them finish third missing out on promotion by just goal difference as they were level on points with second place Rhostyllen FC but this season hasn’t been as positive for the team.

Prior to folding, they were still searching for their first win in the league, sitting second bottom with just one point and had recently been knocked out in the second round of the Welsh Cup by a strong Porthmadog side (two divisions higher), losing 10-0 last Saturday.

Although this season’s form should not take away from what FC Penley have achieved, maintaining a strong side in a very rural village on Wrexham’s outskirts for a number of years always playing with great passion on a weekly basis.

Unfortunately, another excellent grass roots club must bid farewell to the league, however, don’t let this takeaway from the integrity of the Welsh National League Division 1, many of Penley’s key men will find other clubs in the division which could make the competition even more exhilarating to watch that it already is.

Maesgwyn and Brymbo currently top the division with Acrefair bringing up the rear,  but a couple of signings from this sadly now defunct Penley side could cause a good shake up in the standings as the mid season point approaches.
