Coedpoeth survive at Saltney Town

csjypzbw8aekkalCoedpoeth United claimed their second win of the season in the Welsh National League Premier Division yesterday, beating Saltney Town by one goal to nil.

Remarkably, Coedpoeth had two or three major chances for the entire duration of the game which Saltney dominated, but failed to score with a goal from Rhys Hughes in the 20th minute enough to claim all three points from Coedpoeth.

Saltney, eager to kick start their season, with just one victory so far, started on the front foot winning two corners in the first minute, which were subsequently cleared.

On 20 minutes, Coedpoeth took the lead against the run of play, when a dangerous low cross was sent into the Saltney area where Rhys Hughes was able to slot the ball in from yards out.

Although the goal had came to a shock to all in attendance, Saltney were far from stunned and went out to consistently attack the Coedpoeth end. Despite this, their chances went amiss time and time again, giving Coedpoeth the lead at half time.

In the second half, Saltney maintained their grip on the game but still struggled to break Coedpoeth down. The home side had a great chance to score when a defensive error put the ball to Saltney’s Jake Gibbons with space in the Coedpoeth area, but his shot went wide.

As the game went on, Coedpoeth lifted their performance with prospect of all three points on the horizon.  In an effort to boost his side, Adam Bailey brought himself on but unfortunately picked up an injury after minutes on the pitch.

Perhaps the biggest moment of the game came when referee Scott Campbell awarded Saltney an indirect free kick inside Coedpoeth’s area, when goalkeeper Callum Thurnam dropped the ball only to pick it up again outside his six yard area and within six seconds. Despite this chance, which gave Saltney a set piece from just eight yards out, the effort went wide.

After three minutes of injury time the game ended, sending Coedpoeth into celebrations in what was a great win, having been under pressure for the majority of play. They now push onto a tough test at home to FC Nomads, whilst Saltney will try to climb the table against Penycae.
