Barry Town United 1-0 Carmarthen Town

Last night Barry Town rolled back the years to advanced to the Nathaniel MG Welsh Cup final courtesy of Jordan Cotterill’s sublime free-kick.

The four time champions of the Cup started brightly, who had rested a host of players for this game on the weekend where they were defeated 3-0 by Penybont at Jenner Park in the Welsh Cup, however in the early stages of this match it was Barry who took the initiative. Forward TG Naji also looked bright in the early stages of the game, putting the Camarthen back line under pressure whenever he possibly could.

However due to the conditions, the quality of play for large parts of the first half was lacking. Camarthen had a couple of half chances but other than that Barry were barely put under any pressure from a team who are currently sitting in seventh position in the Welsh Premier league. Barry also struggled to get a grip of the game in the first half, and it was starting to remind fans of the Penybont game on the weekend and that is not what manager Gavin Chesterfield would have asked of his players.

After the break the standard of play improved. Barry were a lot better than in the first, but they were still lacking in the final third and that’s where it counts.

The Town then won a free-kick in a promising position… and to the delight of the approximate 400 crowd inside the stadium it found the right hand corner of the net. An unbelievable strike from Jordan Cotterill.

Barry now had all the momentum, but their decision making in the final third continued to cost them in front of goal, they even brought on top scorer James Dixon but even he couldn’t find the back of the net.

Camarthen pushed for a goal late on but they couldn’t find a way through a stubborn barry defence.

Barry Town will now either face The New Saints or Gap Connahs Quay in the final.
