From Pogba to Porthmadog: Clwb Pel Droed meets Jack Laird

Joining Holywell Town last week, former Bangor City and Burscough striker Jack Laird arrives at Halkyn Road with a footballing pedigree that has seen him play against both Pogba and the likes of Porthmadog.

Y Clwb Pel Droed caught up with him about his career so far, and found out his hopes for the season ahead with the Wellmen .

You’ve been out of Football for some time now, how’s it feel to be back playing?

“I have it’s been a nice break spending my time with my little boy… Feels good knowing I’m going to get some game time when I can i miss the feeling of scoring a goal.”

What was your reason for joining Holywell Town?

“I like the manager (Johnny Haseldin) I spoke to him for a while, and he tried to sign me last season when I was at Mold. He seemed someone I would enjoy playing for… and when I’ve played against Holywell in the past they create chances for their strikers.”

What do you think of the Huws Gray Alliance, you spent some time in it last season with Mold Alex?

“Yeah it’s not bad – I  enjoyed my time at Mold last season and it’s a decent standard.”

How would you compare the standard between Welsh Premier League and Huws Gray Alliance?

“I think teams in the Welsh premier are alot fitter, and quicker I would say.”

You’ve played in the Welsh Premier League with Bangor City and Cefn Druids, how would you explain your time at both clubs?

“The worst of my career by far. A full season of injuries and not playing or when I did not being myself or nowhere near. Bangor City was a good club though good fans and good lads. Shame I went there with a bad injury.”

You spent time at Burscough in the Northern Premier Division North, how did you find your time there and how good is that league?

“I only played there for about six games towards the end of the season was okay the manager there was Derek Goulding who is a top fella and asked me to keep myself ticking over.”

What can the Holywell Town supporters expect to see from you?

“Hopefully goals and honesty. It’s going be hard as me and Johnny has spoken because I work alot. So when I’m there, just to expect goals hopefully.”

Have you set yourself any targets for the season and what are they?

“Well it’s nearly the end of November so I’ve missed a big chunk of pre season, so I’m unfit. So my target is to contribute to the team try get myself into double figures in short time.”

In your career who’s the best player you’ve play with and best player against and why?

“Paul Pogba for Manchester United against, and with Carl Winchester at Oldham.

Pogba strolled around didn’t do anything wrong completed every pass did crazy things with the balls.

Carl Winchester was top class. Fulham wanted to buy him and I’m not surprised – he strolled past anybody did any skill could score defend do skill run was quick and was a brilliant lad. I sat next to him in the locker room at Oldham for my first year before he got his pro contract.”
