LEWIS: “WE’RE ON TRACK TO ACHIEVE OUR GOALS”
After a successful 2016 which has seen the club end the year in 5th, Llantwit Major are looking to build on their momentum and continue their good form into 2017.
The club gained promotion to the Welsh League for the 2012/13 season and are in a strong position heading into 2017 with games in hand on the clubs currently above them in the league. We caught up with manager Karl Lewis to see how things are shaping up on and off the field ahead of the restart after the Christmas break.
Llantwit have a strong defensive record so far this season and have conceded just nine goals so far. Tight rear guard action has left their manager feeling pleased heading into 2017.
“Being an ex defender myself I feel it is essential to have a strong back line, then build from the back. I am extremely proud of the lads, but we have still conceded some poor goals this season which much be eradicated from our play.”
Many fans are left frustrated over Christmas as the Welsh League takes an extended break. However, Major’s manager appreciated the break, despite the club having to play catch up in the second half of the season.
“As a club we try to be as professional as we can and remind players to conduct their own fitness in their spare time.”
However, he insists they are ready and fully prepared for the Trefelin test.
“As a club we will be looking to train as many time as possible before the massive game against Trefelin in which we will be looking for the three points after the festive break.”
Llantwit sit nicely in fifth place with seven wins. However, they will be playing catch up soon with second places Trethomas Bluebirds already some seven games ahead of them and manager Lewis believes their JD Welsh Cup run could affect where they finish the season.
“Our expectations prior to the season were to improve on last years league position finish, and continue to develop the club off the pitch.
I feel at the moment we are on track to achieve that goal but I feel our league campaign might be affected by our cup successes which will see a backlog of fixtures having to be fulfilled.”
The gaffer still believes the league is competitive and isn’t as simple as getting wins on the board, despite how impressive Llantwit have started the season.
But, the main aim for now is merely on this weekend’s fixture against Trefelin.
