Stanton joins Trefelin

Port Talbot Town goalkeeper Mathew Stanton has officially joined Welsh League Division Three side Trefelin BGC.

Stanton, who only joined Port Talbot at the beginning of the season, was number one for the club at the start of the season, but had been displaced by Rory McCreesh in recent months.

The voiceforous goalkeeper has been a key component of Port Talbot based sides in the Welsh Leagues over recent years, having already played for Tata Steel, before joining Talbot’s rivals Trefelin.

Stanton was a key member of the squad at Steel before they were disbanded at the end of the 2015/16 season. After their disbanding, Paul Evans was handed the reins at neighbours Port Talbot Town. As part of the restructuring of the playing staff at the GenQuip Stadium, he brought in a large chunk of his squad at Tata, with Stanton being one of them.

However, he was unable to nail down the number one spot at the Steelmen and has subsequently departed for fellow Port Talbot outfit Trefelin.

The club find themselves in 16th place in Division 3, and the club will be hoping with Stanton’s experience between the sticks he can guide them to safety.
