MATCH REVIEW: Newtown 6-1 Aberystwyth

Newtown ended their Welsh Premier League regular season with a thumping 6-1 victory of their local rivals Aberystwyth Town.

The Mid Wales rivals went head to head in the final round of games in Pbase Two, and it was the Robins who came out the dominant victors.

In an exciting opening 10 minutes, both sides exchanged free kicks with four good opportunities arising, but neither side could make the most of them and put their mark on the game.

Despite recent struggles in the league, it was the Seasiders who posed the greatest threat in the opening periods, but Newtown’s stern defence proved difficult o break down.

A goal very nearly came from a Cledan Davies corner, but after Chris Hughes’s men finally cleared the danger.

However, it was the hosts who opened the scoring, on their way to a 6-1 tour. With a fantastic shot after 19 minutes, Nick Rushton opened the scoring.

The second came only four minutes later. After Daniel Alfei was caught out of position, Stef Edwards capitalised and doubled the home side’s lead.

And the Robins really finished off the visitors, as they scored their third goal in seven minutes. Ryan Kershaw added the final touches to provide Newtown clear breathing space.

Mullock pulled off a spectacular save in the 36th minute to deny their rivals, as Wayne Jones’ side headed into the break 3-0 down.

In the second half, Aber came out much more threatening and could have reduced the defective, but were denied by the woodworm three times.

And their chances of a comeback were scuppered just seven minutes into the second half, when Luke Boundford scored Newtown’s fourth.
The goal confirmed that the floodgates had well and truly opened. With freedom and creativity in the final third, Newtown forward Rushron added two more to grab a hat-trick for his side.

Aberystwyth netted a mere consolation goal when young center back Siôn Ewart was introduced into the fray and eased home.
A dismal end to the season for Aberystwyth but a fantastic end for Newtown. After very opposing seasons, Newtown’s Phase Two revival was completed at Latham Park as their resounding victory sees them head into the Welsh Premier League European Play-offs full of confidence.
