Dinas Powys Ladies secured the South Wales Womens & Girls League title on Sunday afternoon with a 7-1 demolition of Abertillery.
Knowing they were just three points from the title, Dinas pushed from the start to force a number of corners. However, hosts Abertillery held their own, sucessfully holding their championship chasing visitors for the opening stage of the game.
Laura Murray broke the deadlock for Dinas after 20 minutes, before skipper Leanne Pattermore doubled the lead from her side’s umpteenth corner. At the break and opting to stay out on the pitch such was their enthusiasm, Dinas seemed determined for there to be no slips in the 45 minutes separating them from the title.
Corners were again a feature of Dinas’ game, as Vicki Elison and Kelly Tuck both headed home to bring the score to 4-0. Captain Pattermore added her second from the spot, before Laura Murray made it 6-0 to all but seal a sensational title win for the former Womens League strugglers.
A number of rolling subs could only work to continue a dominant Dinas display, before young fullback and player of the match Alicia Cox scored the seventh.
And a consolation from Abertillery could not dampen the title winners spirits in a vital game expertly controlled the now-Champions, who now move onto back-to-back cup finals.
