Tangerines sign up super six as prolific-forward McGonigle signs

Conwy Borough have signed prolific striker Corrie McGongigle as well as three of his team mates Sion Hogan, Guto Hughes and Iolo Hughes.

The quartet were part of Glantraeth’s League and Cup double and their title winning experience could bode well for Conwy under new manager Gareth Thomas.

In total, the club have signed six players this week as they look to return to the Cymru Alliance at the first time of asking. Smith has been appointed as new club-captain upon his arrival at Y Morfa.

Ant Williams, Matty Hughes, Guto Hughes and Tom Smith have all joined from sides in North Wales.


McGonigle, a striker who is known to many in North Wales for his goal scoring exploits, scored 59 goals last season for Glantraeth, at the age of jut 20 years-old.

“I am delighted to of captured Corig with several clubs interested in the talented forward” said the Conwy boss when speaking to the clubs website.

The player himself was asked on his thoughts on the move and said he was excited with the prospect of working under the new-look management team at Conwy.

“I am pleased to have signed for Conwy and looking forward to how the team are going to improve and to get back to where they belong. I am really looking forward to working with Alun and Perry and to pushing Conwy upwards and onwards.”

Iolo Hughes, a 21 year-old centre-back was part of the Glantraeth back four that conceded jut 29 goals in the league last season. He played for Premier League side Bangor City, as well as Cymru Alliance side Porthmadog.

Thomas again hinted that Iolo was another player who resisted the urge of playing at a higher level and bought in to his plans at Conwy Borough.

“He has an superb future ahead of him and I am glad that he has signed for us. He is a good footballer.”

Another Hughes from Glantraeth will be joining Iolo at Conwy, in the shape of Guto who is a left-back and was part of that defence alongside Iolo. Guto is representing Anglesey in the Island Games and has experience at Cymru Alliance level with Denbigh Town last season.

A third Hughes joins in the recruitment drive in Matty, Matty has also worked under ‘Perry’ at Denbigh Town like Guto Hughes and joins Iolo Hughes alongside the defence as a centre-back. He featured for the Cefn Druids when they won the Cymru Alliance title.

As well as the youthful players of Corrig McGonigle and Iolo Hughes, Conwy have brought experience to their front line, bringing in forward Kevin Lloyd who turned out for Caernarfon Town last season.

Hughes is also joined by experienced central-midfielder Tom Smith, the Conwy boss Thomas has chosen as the clubs new captain going forward has experience at North Wales clubs like Buckley Town and Flint Town United.

Manager Gareth Thomas summed up the six signing this week when speaking to the club website and looks forward to working with players he’s worked with before.

“I have managed these boys previously and they are all winners. Their experience will be vital in what will be a young squad. They understand the values I want in my squad and will be crucial to the club achieving our targets.”
