Arsenal legend Paul Merson comes out of retirement to sign for Division Three Welsh side Caerau

Caerau FC of the Welsh Football League Division Three have made somewhat of a marquee signing after recruiting former Arsenal and England midfielder Paul Merson.

The two-time Football League First Division winner has already played in Welsh football after signing up for a few brief matches with fellow ex-pro and pundit Chris Kamara as the pair helped improve the results of Welshpool Town.

His playing career spanned twenty years, with a majority of those appearances for Arsenal, but also had spells with Middlesbrough, Portsmouth and Aston Villa.

A piece in The Sun newspaper says that the 49 year-old wants to help increase the attendances of the Bridgend club after they sit thirteenth in the table after five games played. Merson also has friends on the board at the club and was interested to get on board with those involved.

As well as playing, he also took charge as manager of Walsall from 2004-2006.

He is set to make his debut next Wednesday against Pontyclun.
