Caernarfon Town snap up Seasiders duo ahead of Welsh Premier League challenge

Prestatyn Town duo Ben Maher and Ross Stephens have remained in the Welsh Premier League after signing for new boys Caernarfon Town.

The pair had been linked with a move to Cymru Alliance side Flint Town United, but have since moved to The Oval.

Maher and Stephens are Sean Eardley’s first signings, since being promoted to the Welsh Premier League this season.

The duo was relegated with Prestatyn Town last season after the Seasiders finished bottom in the top flight. They are just two of a plethora of departures from Bastion Gardens this post-season.

Maher, 23, who joined Prestatyn last January played 21 times last season, scoring 4 goals, despite being a defender. He has had previous experience with North Wales rivals Rhyl, after moving from Tranmere Rovers, where he played for their U18s.

“I’m looking forward to working with Ben. He’s a young lad but so grounded and that was the first thing that hit me after speaking to him,” said Eardley to Caernarfon Town.

He has good energy levels and can play in a variety of positions and is someone who will add quality to the squad after playing the majority of league games for Prestatyn in the Welsh Premier League last year.”

Stephens who is a 33-year-old midfielder moved to Prestatyn from Mid Wales side Caersws. He has spent a majority of his career playing in Wales, for clubs like Caersws, Rhyl, Welshpool Town, Aberystwyth Town and Newtown. He spent a total of five years at Prestatyn Town, winning a Welsh Cup with the Seasiders.

“Ross possesses an abundance of experience within the WPL boasting over 300 appearances. He is good from set pieces and has a sweet left foot and will be good to have around the place,” added Eardley.

He is eager to get going and I’m sure he’ll receive a good welcome from the Cofi Army.”
