Fans Choice: Team of the Season: Welsh Football League Division Two 2017/2018

It was one of the most exciting promotion races of the South Wales pyramid with a total of five teams competing for the Division Two title in the final month of the season.

Llantwit Major, Pontypridd Town and Ammanford all won promotion to Division Two, in one of the most evenly fought in Welsh League history.

Major won the division by two points, whilst STM Sports missed out on promotion by just three points.

Voters of Y Clwb Pel-Droed have voted in their hundreds to shape together the Division Two ‘Team of the Season.’

Goalkeeper: Jack Lansdowne (Llantwit Major)

Jack has been a massive part of the furniture of Llantwit Major. He has played in every league for the club since he was a teenager. He has conceded just 27 goals in this league campaign, the best in the league.

Right-Back: Matthew Jones (Ammanford)

A right-back who came through the club’s youth system, Jones balances the transition between defence and attack seamlessly. The defender returned to first-team action in WFL3, after timeout due to work commitments. Helped guide the club to two promotions, and has solidified the right-back spot as his own.

Centre-back: Sean Williams (Llantwit Major)

Williams, in his second season with Major after spending a decade at Penybont has been a big component of their defence. He is one of the most prolific defenders in the league in terms of goals scored.

Centre-back: Nyran Bird (Pontypridd Town)

Signed from Rhondda rivals AFC Porth, Nyran Bird has been a strong part of Ponty’s promotion winning defence this season. He and Scott Hillman have shipped just 31 goals this campaign, the second best in the league.

LB: Rhys Fisher (Ammanford)

Fisher has taken massive strides forward this season. The club captain has been at the club since his formative years, and has been a mainstay in the first team for a number of years. However, this year the defender chipped in with seven league goals to guide his side to promotion.

RM: Ben Ahmun (STM Sports)

After making the move to Llanrumney University Fields from relegated Division One side Caldicot Town, Ahmun enjoyed the season with the Cardiff based side.

CM: Joe Evans (STM Sports)

Ahmun is joined in midfield by STM Sports teammate Joe Evans. Evans made the move to Llanrumney from Division One side Taffs Well. The former Wellman captain is a box-to-box midfielder, helping provide service to the prolific to the frontmen.

CM: Matthew Fisher (Ammanford)

The creative lynchpin of the Ammanford attack, Fisher has been effervescent in the black and white of Ammanford this season. Other than one short spell at Haverfordwest County, the player has been a constant at Ammanford since his youth team days. The creative outlet has been ever so consistent this season and chipped in with 12 important goals this term.

LM: Gavin Jones (Ammanford)

The lightning-quick forward made his Ammanford debut just last season but has impressed hugely since the move. With previous experience with Merthyr Town and Swansea City youth teams, the youngster was key in the promotion charge this term.

ST: Luke Gullick (Pontypridd Town)

The 31-year-old striker has finished top of the Division Two goal scorers charts and was named Player of the Season in the Y Clwb Pel-Droed awards. He’s played for clubs such as Bishops Stortford, Swindon Supermarine and Chippenham.

ST: Sam Snaith (Llantwit Major)

The 18-year-old has burst onto the scene this season and has attracted interest from clubs higher in the Welsh pyramid system. The former Cardiff City youngster has over 15 goals this season and has all the makings of a traditional British forward
