With 68 goals across 15 games this weekend, there certainly was a large amount of goals to enjoy from the third round of the Nathaniel Car Sales Welsh League Cup.
Three teams ensured their place in the third round of the Cup; with Penybont and Cambrian & Clydach Vale BGC beating Albion Rovers 0-5 and Ammanford 4-0 respectively. Whilst STM Sports continued their impressive run in the Cup by putting five past Tredegar Town and keeping a clean sheet- following a 20-0 drumming of Careau in the previous round- Joshua Graham netting a hattrick in the Cup once again.
Goytre narrowly lost out to fellow Welsh League Division One Llantwit Major, with Luke Cox scoring the only goal of the game. Other away wins include Undy Athletic winning 1-4 against Third Division side AFC Porth and Treflin Boys and Girls Club coming from behind to defeat Dinas Powys 1-2 thanks to a Damon Thomas brace.
Most likely one of the games of the League Cup will be Haverfordwest County’s 5-4 win over Bridgend Street. With the scores at 2-1 at half time, thanks to goals from Captain Sean Pemberton and a Lee Trundle penalty for the Bluebirds after a Paul Fowler spot kick gave Bridgend the lead, the last ten minutes saw late drama with three goals seeing the game head to extra-time at 3-3. Sub Ben Fawcett scored a brace either side of a 4th for Bridgend Street to see the tie finish in favour of the home side.
A valiant second half display from Penydarren BGC saw the home side score four after the teams couldn’t be separated at half time with the scores at 1-1- goals coming from Joshua Brogden, two from Christopher Colvin, Conner Kinsey and Asa Lloyd. Meanwhile, a convincing Pontyclun FC recorded a 3-0 win at Ivor Park against Afan Lido and a fellow Division Three side Treharris Athletic Western narrowly lost to Port Talbot Town 1-2.
Briton Ferry and Panteg couldn’t be separated after a 120 minutes with the scores level at 2-2: Briton eventually winning 3-2 on penalties. Ynysygerwn defeated higher league opposition in Caerau ELY with Nick Maggs and Nathan Davies scoring one whilst Sam Jones got a double for the Llandarcy based side, with Caerau ELY scoring in between the third and fourth. Elsewhere, Garden Village travelled to and defeated Penrhiwceiber by the odd goal in five, Goytre United narrowly beating Taffs Wells 2-1 at Glenhafod Park Stadium and fellow Division One side Cwmamman United shut-out Newport City after putting two past Tsvetan Pateev in Newport’s net.
With Aberbargoed Buds to face Treowen Stars this coming Wednesday, the quarter-finalists will be finalised.
