Cardiff Combination League Preview
Cardiff Combination Football League returns for its third week of fixtures as league action continues.
With the previous two weeks of fixtures of Game of the Week kicking off at 4:15pm, Pontprennau Pumas take on Avenue Hotspur’s 2nds at the same time with all the games being played down Cardiff University Playing Fields.
Each of the three divisions have games on this weekend, the Premier Divisions hosts four games which is also the same amount of games in the Second Division. While the First Division has three games being played.
PREMIER DIVISION
Avenue Hotspur FC V Cathays Cons AFC
Avenue Hotspur, who lie fifth in the table, take on Cathays Cons who sit one place ahead of them in fourth place.
Hotspur will look to bounce back from their first defeat of the season against Aberystwyth Exiles last Saturday, 8-5. While Cons last time out lost 3-2 against Fairwater FC. With both teams winning their first game, Cathays Cons beating Tiger Bay 2-1 and Avenue Hotspur also winning 2-1 over Thornhill AFC, an interesting tie lies ahead.
Both are also on the same number of points tomorrow’s game with Gareth Lloyd’s men on a zero goal difference while Stuart Cosslett’s side are on -2 and it will be interesting to see who pulls ahead.
St Mellons Athletic V Docks Albion
St Mellons Athletic who lie sixth place in the table take on Docks Albion who sit in second place.
Athletic who have only played one game this season against Fairwater FC and lost 2-1, while Albion remain undefeated in their two games. Drawing 4-4 with Aberystwyth Exiles and beating Tiger Bay 6-1.
It will be interesting to see if the Alan Green’s men can carry on their run of games without defeat while Lauren Herbert-Ibrahim’s side will be aiming to get their first victory of the new season.
Thornhill Athletic Football Club V Aberystwyth Exiles
Thornhill Athletic, like St Mellons Athletic have only played one game of the season and one place behind them in seventh place while visitors Aberystwyth Exiles are still yet to taste defeat after two games are in third place in the table.
Thornhill who lost 2-1 to St Mellons while Aberystwyth drew 4-4 in their first game against Docks Albion and 8-5 over Avenue Hotspur.
It will be interesting to see if the game will be a high scoring one after the Exiles team have seen twenty-one goals been scored in just two games.
Tiger Bay V Fairwater FC
Top vs bottom as Tiger Bay look to win their first game of the season after consecutive defeats to Cathays Cons, 2-1 and Docks Albion. 6-1. While Fairwater have won both of their games beating St Mellons Athletic 2-1 and Cathays Cons 3-2.
The Parker Harris Spponer Super Cup Winners aim to move away from the others and chase their third consecutive win while the visitors who have conceded eight goals from two games will be hoping that they can keep improve their goal difference and move up the table.
FIRST DIVISION
Eight teams across the three leagues have yet to win a game with Tiger Bay of the Premier Division. Fairwater 2nds, Glamorgan 2nds and Roath Park Rangers of Division Two but Aberystwyth Exiles 2nds are one of four teams in Division One yet to win a game.
They come up against Llanishen Wanders who won their first game 4-3 over local rivals Llanishen FC while defeats against Glamorgan Athletic, 5-2 in the first game of the season two weeks ago and Caraeu Ely, 2-1 last Saturday.
The other three teams yet to win a game are Llanishen who take on Grange All Stars, another team who haven’t won this season lost to Glamorgan Athletic (4-0) on the 13th September.
Both teams have a chance to win their first points of the season but with Llanishen playing in their third game of the season. The All Stars are playing in their second game.
The last of the four teams yet to taste a victory is Cathays United, who play in the third game of the week against two wins from two Glamorgan AFC.
United like Grange All Stars have only played once this season lost to Caerau Ely 6-0 two weeks ago while Glamorgan have picked up six points from six with victories over Aberystwyth Exiles, 5-2) and Llanishen FC, 3-2 and will hope to pick up their third win in three with victory over Cathays.
SECOND DIVISION
Glamorgan AFC 2nds V Roath Park Rangers
There are four games this week in Division Two with Glamorgan AFC 2nds taking on newly formed Roath Park Rangers. With both teams failing to win their opening two games with Glamorgan losing to Cathays Cons 2nds 5-1 on the 13th September and Gabalfa 4-0, while Rangers have been on the end of defeats to Pontprennau Pumas, 3-0, and Avenue Hotspur, 7-1 but with it came their first goal they had ever scored in the League. Both teams look to claim their first points and victory of the season.
Fairwater FC 2nds V Cathays Cons 2nds
In what is an amazing turn of events Fairwaters 1st lead the Premier Division while their 2nds are bottom of Division Two with -17 and only three goals scored.
Fairwater are yet to taste victory and take on a team in form in Cathays Cons have won their first two games of the new season over Glamorgan Athletic 5-1 and Pontprennau Pumas 3-2 while the bottom team lost 14-0 against Homeguard last weekend and 6-3 to Avenue Hotspur 2nds the week before and are hoping to bounce back and claim their first points of the season.
Gabalfa V Homeguard
Gabalfa have started their season well with a convincing 4-0 win over Glamorgan Athletic 2nds come up against a team who have scored goals for fun last time out. Homeguard won fourteen nil over Fairwater FC 2nds and with both teams yet to concede a goal today’s game will be interesting to see if each of them can hold onto their defensive records as they both each hold the best records in the league.
The last game of the week sees Pontprennau Pumas take on Avenue Hotspurs 2nds in the late kick off, 4:15pm. The Pumas play their third game of the season after 1 win (3-0 against Roath Park Rangers) and 1 defeat, 3-2 against Cathays Cons, from their opening two games of the season and will look back to bounce back to winning ways as they go up against top of the table. Hotspur who have won their first two games and have scored 13 goals in the process, 6-3 against Fairwater 2nds and 7-1 over Roath Park Rangers.
