Champions League Club Rankings place Barry above two Premier League juggernauts

JD Welsh Premier League

Welsh Premier League outfit Barry Town United are ranked ahead of two English Premier League teams in the UEFA all-time Champions League Club Ranking.

Barry have enjoyed a positive start to the campaign under manager Gavin Chesterfield and secured a 5-2 victory over Llanelli Town in their latest league fixture.

The Linnets sit 232nd in the rankings, ahead of both English Premier League clubs Wolves and Burnley.

While Sky Bet Championship sides Ipswich and Blackburn are also ranked below the South Wales outfit.

Jenner Park played host to a memorable evening in August 2001 as Barry took on Portuguese side FC Porto in a Champions League qualifying second round clash.

Goals from Lee Phillips, Gary Lloyd and current Newport County manager Mike Flynn secured a 3-1 victory for the hosts.

Despite an 8-0 defeat in Portugal in the reverse fixture, it was an evening that lives long in the memory of Barry fans.

Current Champions League holders Real Madrid sit top of the rankings, followed by Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

While English Premier League giants Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea are the top three ranked teams from the United Kingdom.

The full rankings of each respective team can be found in the UEFA Champions League Statistics Handbook 2018/19.

  1. You mention Barry’s (in)famous victory over Porto (who, incidentally, are ranked 9th in the current rankings!) but we’ve also had decent results against Dynamo Kiev (ranked 11th), Skonto (ranked 88th) Boavista (ranked 123rd), Valletta (ranked 136th), Vardar (ranked 144th) and Aberdeen (ranked 171th). So not too bad a record over all.
