Bailey departs Newtown for Hednesford

Newtown defender Ben Bailey has left the Welsh Premier League outfit for Northern Premier League Premier Division outfit Hednesford Town FC.

The centre-back had been a prominent figure in the Newtown first team this season, and his departure will be a big blow to Chris Hughes and his side’s chances of securing a top six spot come the end of Phase One.

Bailey is from Hednesford, and spent his formative years in the Pitmen’s youth setup, having joined them eleven years ago in 2007. But, the player then moved on to AFC Telford, the club of former Newtown stalwart Shane Sutton.

But, the defender moved across the border to join up with the Robins just this summer, and his departure back to his hometown club will be a major loss to Hughes and his side.

Newtown currently sit in the final top six spot, leading Caernarfon Town by two points heading into the final stretch of Phase One. The departure leaves Hughes short at the back, with Kieron Mills-Evans the only other recognised centre half.

Jay Denny can provide cover in the position, but operates first and foremost as a midfielder, and Tom Goodwin has previously dropped back from midfielder to provide some cover when the Robins have been short at the back, but has predominantly only done so in a back three formation.

But, the most viable option seems to be Luke Boundford, who has previous experience at the back for the club. Despite being a forward in nature, he is an utility man.

However, Hughes may be reluctant to pull him away from his forward role, given that he has bagged six goals in 662 minutes of action this season, which could be key in securing Newtown’s position in the top six come the end of January.
