Aberystwyth Town sign Wales U19’s goalkeeper Callum Preston

JD Welsh Premier League side Aberystwyth Town have signed Wales U19’s goalkeeper Callum Preston.

It’s the first piece of business in the January transfer window for Neville Powell’s side.

The Stafford-born goalkeeper was brought up in Welshpool and had previously been on the books of Birmingham City. Preston has experience of senior football with Football League side Crawley Town and non-league club Worcester City. He made one appearance for the Wales Under-19s in 2014.

The 23-year-old joins the Green and Blacks following a brief break from professional football, to focus on his degree in professional sports writing and broadcasting.

Speaking to DailyPostWales after his release from Wrexham, Preston spoke of his career in sports writing: “When I was younger, 18 or 19 at Birmingham it is brilliant. Your first year as a pro everything is done for you and you never really think that football is going to end for you.”

“You don’t think about things like that (the end of a career), and I think more players need to be made aware that this is only a short career.

Preston will be able to make his debut next week against Cardiff Metropolitan in Round Four of the JD Welsh Cup.

Experienced goalkeeper Terry McCormick has been playing in the Aberystwyth goal, following the departure of Chris Mullock to Cymru Alliance side Bangor City.
