FIVE players unfortunate to miss out on Wales C call-up

Mark Jones has today named his Wales C squad for the England clash, but there are some absentees, who could have offered an alternative to his side.

A 21-man squad has been named by Jonah as they prepare for their second meeting with the Non-League Three Lions, this time at Salford City.

There are a few new faces, like Barry  Town United’s Clayton Green and Robbie and Met duo Emlyn Lewis and Joel Edwards. Carmarthen Town’s sole representative is Liam Thomas.

Caernarfon Town’s Alex Ramsey and Danny Brookwell were also included, whilst youngsters Jake Phillips from Connah’s Quay, Matthew Jones from Aberystwyth also made the cut.

But having looked at the squad, should Jonah have looked elsewhere to any of these players?

Darren Thomas (Caernarfon Town)

Thomas is the fourth highest assisting Welshman in the league, with only Eliot Evans, Henry Jones and Simon Spender ahead of him.

There needs to be some balance however in the squad, with a few box-to-box midfielders like Clayton Green and Robbie Patten needed, to offer the midfield some solidity, as the attackers move forward.

Luke Cooper (Barry Town United)

Luke Cooper is unfortunate to miss out on a call-up, given he has been part of an ardent Barry Town United back-line this season.

He does, however, possess similarity to Emlyn Lewis and Nathan Peate, who are both considerably tall and are strong in the air.

Met boasts a better defensive record than Barry this season, which is why Lewis may have been selected ahead of Cooper.

Should there be any more Wales C fixtures for the remainder of the year or in the near future that will allow more players game time, Cooper could push his way into the squad.

James Loveridge (Llanelli Town)

There aren’t many out and out forwards in the squad. Instead, there are players with pace, who can cause teams problems on the break. On this occasion, it looks like Danny Brookwell has been chosen ahead of Loveridge, given the similarities between the two.

Brookwell has been featuring for Caernarfon as of late, whilst Loveridge has been absent for the struggling Reds.

Nathan Craig (Caernarfon Town)

Perhaps the most notable of absentees. The Caernarfon captain will not be linking up with goalkeeper Alex Ramsay and forward Danny Brookwell.

Craig has been beaten to a call-up by Barry Town United’s Chris Hugh and Newtown’s Callum Roberts. Prolific from the spot for Caernarfon this season, Craig’s omission is unfortunate. Hugh gave a good account of himself last time out and Callum Roberts will have to work well to get that shirt off of Hugh.

Rob Hughes (Connah’s Quay Nomads)

Since returning to Wales after a spell in Australia, Hughes has become an important player for the Nomads. He was a player that Andy Morrison had tracked for some time and has impressed in the Welsh Premier League over the last year.

The 26-year-old is unfortunate to miss out on this occasion but is competing against a very strong Barry Town United central midfield of a strong Welsh contingent.
