Risca showed “character” to overcome STM in 2-1 victory, says Berry
Risca United manager Simon Berry was full of praise for his side as they defeated STM Sports 2-1 this weekend.
Risca’s win signifies a step in the right direction for Berry’s men, who toppled one of the league’s most formidable outfits with the victory, thanks to goals from Lewis Davies and Tom Pratt.
Berry insists that his players showed “character” to come back from 1-1 and to score the winner against STM.
“Really pleased with the performance and the result obviously, to come down here and win 2-1 was a real good positive performance. I thought we deserved it as well. I thought we could go on and lose it, but to be fair, the boys showed character went on to win 2-1 and could have got a couple more, so really pleased with the performance and the result.”
Berry highlighted the performance of match winner Pratt, who managed to find the back of the net after being denied earlier on in the game.
The manager stated that the striker’s hard work is significant to the team.
“Tom’s a really good player, works really hard, constant up and down, great lad as well. Travels from Llanelli to play for us, no-one deserved to score the winner more than Tom Pratt to be fair, really good performance.”
Pratt’s goal was accompanied by a goal from Davies, who opened the scoring in the game.
After joining the club from lower down the pyramid system, Berry has stated that he has blossomed since joining the outfit.
“Lewis (Davies) is another honest player, comes from lower leagues. Lewis has been really good for us, one of our best players this year and it was a great finish, set the game up to start really well, really good.”
It has been a gruelling season so far for the club, who have been languishing down in the bottom half of the Division Two table.
However, Saturday’s victory gives the club some breathing space between themselves and the relegation zone, as they edge eight points clear of AFC Llwydcoed in 14th.
The victory will give the side confidence to kick on in the next few games to end the season on a high, according to the manager.
“Absolutely, we were getting ourselves dragged into the bottom couple, but after that result, that’s kind of really put us back into safe mode. Hopefully go on to win the next couple of games to finish the season strongly.
Despite the impressive result, the Risca manager believes it is not beyond his squad to produce such performances on a regular basis and hopes his side can show their capabilities next season.
“That performance has been coming for a lot of us this year. We’ve dominated a lot of games this year, but not maybe got the right results, but that sets us up for next four of five games and pre-season really. We’ve shown we can live with the best side in the league today, and we should be doing that week in week out.”
“We knew STM, them, and Swansea Uni were the two best sides in the league, so to come down here and get a result was massive.
