League Cup final win would be greatest achievement says Maggs

Ynysygerwn boss Nicholas Maggs said a League Cup win this evening would be the clubs biggest achievement.

The Neath Side are in their first ever Welsh League Cup final, just a few years after being promoted.

Ynysygerwn who earned a mid table finish in Division Three, take on fellow tier four side Penydarren, who won the league title and are now looking to make it a double.

Ynysygerwn have overcome a number of higher opposition clubs, with a number earning promotion or competing for a place in the Welsh Premier League.

The club who are known for having Tottenham and Wales defender Ben Davies as a Club President, have gained their own exposure this season with their Cup run.

“This cup final has given our club more exposure and it may help bring more people into our club. If we were to win the competition though it would be the biggest achievement for the club.

“Sometime you can have a lucky cup run but we’ve played all the big sides as well as Caerau Ely who have recently been promoted and Croesyceiliog

The Neath League play-off win remains biggest game in clubs history says Ynysygerwn boss Nicholas Maggs.

Despite leading his side into this evening’s League Cup final, Nicholas Maggs has explained

Maggs said: “I’ve always said the Play Off final to game our Welsh League status was the biggest game we’ve played in, and to be honest I probably will stick by that.

“At the time for our club to gain promotion was against the odds, but if we lost that game we may have lost the squad of players we had at the time.”

Penydarren may have only been in the Cup for this season alone, but some could argue that despite their Welsh League experience, Ynysygerwn are underdogs in this one.

The Merthyr side knocked out holders Trefelin at Taffs Well to reach this stage of the competition.

“It was no surprise to see them gaining promotion this season, and like Swansea University I wouldn’t be surprised if they go on to gain another promotion next season.

“I have a lot of respect for their manager Kerry Mullins, he’s a lovely bloke and he’s built a really good squad at Penydarren. They have the right mixture of quality and experience and we know we are in for a tough game on Friday evening.”

We are massive underdogs for the game, as we have been in every round so far. Penydarren will be going into the game as a Division Two side and obviously as champions of Division Three.

“You can’t win leagues with 30 games at this level  by luck, its because they have been the best and most consistent side during the season, where as we have finish in the bottom half of the league.”
