Ynys Môn made it two wins out of two after they defeated Orkney in the Inter-Island games.
Sam Jones’ penalty late in the second half, earned Ynys Môn the victory after Jay Gibbs and Mel McGuiness scored in the first. Liam Delday scored for Orkney.
A bumper crowd turned out to watch Ynys Môn’s men team in their second match against Orkney at Gwalchmai as Campbell Harrison’s men earned a second consecutive victory.
The match started at a rapid pace, with Ynys Môn having a golden chance from Mel McGinness cleared off the line after only 47 seconds, as the hosts hoped to pick up where they left off after their 2-1 victory against the Western Isles.
Ynys Môn had another great chance shortly after, but Dean Garmey’s header flew just over the bar before a McGinness volley ended up going narrowly wide of the mark.
The hosts broke the deadlock in the opening quarter when Jay Gibbs tapped in from close range after a fantastic pass across goal.
Buoyed by that goal, the Ynys Môn side were looking for another, and striker Mel McGinness duly obliged in the 36th minute. He struck with a sublime right-footed effort that flew into the far corner of the post, leaving visiting keeper Cameron McConnachie with no chance.
Now with a two-goal lead, the hosts decided to sit back and enjoy possession for the rest of the half. They were made to pay for not putting the game out of sight when Liam Delday sneaked in behind the Ynys Môn defence, rounding goalkeeper Paul Pritchard and sending the ball into the back of the empty net to reduce the arrears in the 44th minute.
The visitors continued their bright spell into the second half, as they continued to create chances to get the equaliser, with James Pickles going close with a strike from the edge of the box.
Goalscorer Liam Delday beat keeper Pritchard again, only for full-back Ryan Taylor to clear off the line to keep the hosts in front.
However, as the game went on, Ynys Môn began to grow into the game more and more and could’ve extended their lead through a Jay Gibbs free kick that was fired a whisker wide, and an Alex Boss effort that was well parried by McConnachie.
As the game headed towards its latter stages, the ball found Jay Gibbs in space, and his run into the box lead to him being fouled by the goalkeeper, who failed to beat Gibbs to the ball after a heavy touch, with the referee duly pointing to the spot.
A confident Sam Jones stepped up and fired a powerful effort past McConnachie to make it 3-1 to Ynys Môn three minutes from time with the hosts then holding on for the win just four minutes later.
Next up for Ynys Môn is the tantalising fixture against one of the pre-tournament favourites Jersey, which will decide which side finishes top of Group A. That match will be played at Llangefni Town FC’s Cae Bob Parry ground this evening.
