Wales captain Ashley Williams is on the verge of sealing a deal with SkyBet Championship promotion hopefuls, Bristol City.

Former Swansea City centre-back, Williams, became a free agent during the summer as his loan spell at Stoke City and his Everton contract expired.

The 34-year-old, who made his Welsh international debut whilst playing for Stockport County in 2008, had already turned down a move to Turkey, the Middle East and the MLS prior to interest from Lee Johnson’s side.

He was spotted in a Bristol City tracksuit, speaking to manager Lee Johnson.

Wales manager Ryan Giggs revealed that Williams is close to a move to Bristol City.

“Regarding the players, obviously the big one is Ash, he’s not involved in the squad,” said Giggs.

“He’s yet to find a club, I think he’s more or less signed for Bristol City, I know he’s in talks with them. He’s not done a pre-season.”

“I spoke with Ash last week and he was fine about it. It wasn’t a surprise to him. He hasn’t let me down, and he’s been brilliant for me as a captain on and off the pitch.

“It wasn’t an easy decision but we have players who are playing, especially in his position so I’m just being fair to those players really. If he plays games then he’ll be involved.”

Williams had been with the Bristol City squad after they beat Derby County at Pride Park.

The Robins have been in search of a defender in the free-agent market following the late summer transfer window departure of Adam Webster, and are hoping to capture Williams on a 12-month contract.
