Charlie Philpott: Wales goalkeeper scores on international debut

Scoring on your international debut is a proud moment for any player, but for Charlie Philpott, his goal against Austria was extra special. Why? He’s a goalkeeper!

Goals from the men in the sticks usually come from the last attempt as a team chases the game but Charlie Philpott rubbed salt into the wounds with his long-distance strike as Wales ran out 8-1 winners in Südstadt.

There’s nothing quite like seeing a goalkeeper scoring a goal, given the rarity of it.

Making his Wales debut, two days before his 18th birthday, Philpott’s strike from just outside the first penalty mark beat the Austrian goalkeeper.

Philpott then celebrated jubilantly as he ran to celebrate with the bench.

The 17-year-old who plays Futsal for Reading Royal is also the youth goalkeeper at English non-league side Eastleigh.

Wales take on Austria again on Sunday as part of a friendly doubleheader.
