What do Welsh League club Bridgend Street and Champions League winners Liverpool have in common?

They both will have played two competitive games in two consecutive days after Liverpool’s involvement in two Cup competitions which have overlapped.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will play Aston Villa on 17 December in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup semi-final, before taking part in the semi-finals of the Club World Cup the following day.

Welsh Football League club Bridgend Street though have already been there, done it and have the shirt to show for it.

The Splott based club had to play in their maiden League Cup final, as well as play their final league fixture of the season.

Their Cup run came at a cost as they were forced to play a number of fixtures back to back, in doing so they were forced to concede their promotion ambitions.

Bridgend Street lost the final 3-1 to a Llanelli Town squad which featured Lee Trundle at Briton Ferry Llansawel’s Old Road.

A day later, they’d make their way down the M4 again to take on Trefelin in a league fixture.

Bridgend Street manager Craig Dale would do what Jurgen Klopp could plan to do to combat this rare situation by play two different sides.

It was a happier outing for the Street as a patched-up squad of the reserve, youth and fringe players of the League Cup final featured in a 2-1 victory. Harry Burges and Jay Edwards scoring.

The season that followed after Street’s double-header saw them involved in a fixture pile-up again.

They were made to play eight games in 24 days after a number of postponements. They’d later go on to win promotion, pipping the side they defeated in their final league fixture from the last season Trefelin BGC on goal difference.

It’s not the first time a Welsh side have been involved in a double-header.

Mark Hughes once played two games in two countries in a day.

The former Wales boss played for Bayern Munich in a 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund after playing for Wales in a 2-0 defeat to the Czech Republic on the same day.
