Numerous tributes have been paid to ‘one of the nicest men’ in Welsh domestic football as Carmarthen Town lost one its great club servants.
Gareth Jones was a long time official at the Old Gold, serving in a number of roles during his service to the club.
On Tuesday the club confirmed via that Gareth had died following a battle with illness.
The club posted: ‘It is with sadness that we inform you of the death of Gareth Jones.
“He never lost his humour during a difficult and painful illness, indeed he died as he had lived thinking and helping others. Our thoughts and sympathies are extended to Meinir and his family.’
Tributes poured in on social media from players, supporters and club officials alike, with former Aberystwyth Town defender describing Jones as ‘”one of the nicest men in Welsh Premier football.”
Bala Town added: “Incredibly sad news. Gareth was a gent of a man and will be dearly missed.”
Afan Lido also paid their respects, posting: ‘Very sad news. Gareth was a friend to many at the club and a great help to us when we were striving for promotion.
“It was always a pleasure to see Gareth at matches and his loss will be felt by everyone. Our deepest sympathies to his family and to you all, from everyone at Lido.”
Llanelli, Cambrian and Clydach and Taffs Wells also took to social media to say their words of condolence, but it wasn’t just clubs with kind words to say.
TNS Owner Mike Harris said: ‘The news comes to me and TNS with great sadness as our football family has lost a great campaigner for your club and the game in Wales.
“Gareth was always a pleasure to see at functions or when we played.”
Journalist Matt Burgess added: “Extremely sad news. Always a smiling friendly face whenever I visited the club, always gave positive feedback about my writing, loved Carmarthen Town, but more importantly a lovely man.
“So sorry to hear this news, my thoughts go to his family, friends and everyone at the club.”
