Wales Under-19s 2-2 Russia Under-19s: Late show at Leckwith forces anxious final day wait

Russia stalled Wales Under-19’s Euro qualification as they played to a 2-2 draw at Leckwith Stadium.

A late equaliser from Russia’s Danila Prokhin meant Wales will have to secure qualification against Kosovo on Tuesday in Newport.

Aleksandr Kerzhakov’s side took a first-half lead through Kirill Kosarev on the half-hour mark.

Neco Williams – who made his senior Liverpool debut last month – scored two penalties in the 66th and 82nd minute to turn the game on its head.

Prokhin’s header three minutes later would force Rob Edward’s young guns to wait.

Russia were impressive from the start of the game, showing Wales some early warning signs with Stepan Oganesyan showcasing some trickery.

Wales goalkeeper Webb was forced into an acrobatic save as he denied Ilya Byokvski.

Zenit starlet Kirill Kosarev silenced the home faithful with the opening goal. The 18-year-old with neat feet placing his shot past Webb.

Wales were dealt a blow as goalkeeper Lewis Webb was forced off with a head injury after colliding with goalscorer Kosarev.

Edwards’ side had a late push in last few minutes but were unable to break down the Russian defence.

Wales were offered a route back into the game after a penalty was awarded for a handball. Williams powered his penalty into the top corner sending Bucharev the wrong way.

Penybont loanee Dan Griffiths was introduced as Edwards pushed Wales forward to try and qualify in Cardiff. His trickery saw him brought down in the box for a second penalty.

Neco Williams showed his composure to score a second from the spot.

Wales let slip of their lead moments later though as Edgar Sevikyen’s pass across goal was finished off by Prokhin, heading past substitute goalkeeper Barden.
