STM Sports 2-1 Caerau Ely: Ahmun and Bateman on target for Mellons in Derby

Ben Ahmun and Calum Bateman were on target as Danny Hooper tasted defeat in his first game in charge of Caerau Ely.

Ahmun and Bateman scored in the second-half to move three points off third.

Corey Spencer’s goal with six minutes remaining wasn’t enough to earn a second point in as many games for the Young Guns.

Dylan Amin had a tame effort on goal in which Benjamin Boyer was unchallenged by the effort.

A miskick from Elliot Matthews almost led to a goal for the hosts.

Matthews made amends though as he saved a goal-bound header from Graham.

Up the other end, Caerau captain Jerome Maynard then saw a header whizz just past the post.

Bateman had the better chance of the half but was unable to get a clean connection onto his effort.

Caerau Ely will have taken pride in holding a prolific Mellons attack at the break.

However, their rearguard was broken down as a familiar source for goals was on target for the Mellons.

Calum Bateman volleyed the ball past Matthews to pull STM ahead.

Rather than resting on their laurels, manager Dale Gardiner substituted striker Ben Ahmun on for defender Chris Hajgato a the Mellons sought an insurance goal.

Ahmun’s introduction proved to be a wise one as he doubled their advantage with fifteen minutes remaining.

The introduction of David Lyon will give Danny Hooper food for thought after he gave Caerau a more attacking verve about themselves.

Lyon was involved as his cross fell to Corey Spencer who hit his strike into the bottom corner.

Despite not being able to gain a second point in the space of a week from STM, Caerau will take confidence in their close shaves with the Nathaniel MG Cup finalists.
