Briton Ferry Llansawel 1-4 Swansea University: Students stroll to victory to complete double
Swansea University remain top of the Cymru South after convincingly beating title rivals Briton Ferry.
The Students inflicted most of the damage in the first-half with Marley Bishop-Wisdom scoring a fourteen-minute brace before Arion Sobers-Assue inflicted further damage.
An own-goal two minutes before the break for Reds offered them slight hope but Thomas Johnston put to bed any fightback two minutes into the second half with a towing header.
The Reds also had Sam Baker sent off in the 78th minute, making for a dismal showing against their opponents.
It was a performance which will put the Cymru South on alert, given their margin of victory and the manner of their performance against over a title competitor.
Swansea University pressed well in the opening few minutes as they put early pressure onto Briton Ferry.
The first opportunity fell to the hosts as Cameron Harris’ low shot was cut just wide of the target.
Swansea took the lead with their first meaningful opportunity.
Will Toms pulled the ball back to find Bishop-Wisdom across goal and he showed composure to strike home from close-range.
Bishop-Wisdom scored his second goal five minutes later as the Students showed their clinical edge.
Adam Orme’s well-timed pass to Wisdom saw him tuck the ball past an onrushing Conah McFenton.
Bishop-Wisdom was proving a handful for the Reds defence and forced McFenton to save at his near post as he searched for his hat-trick.
The visitors continued to cut Briton Ferry open at will, playing with a panache which will have delighted manager Dafydd Evans.
Toms’ corners put Ferry under more pressure with Hugo Cowan going close to furthering the lead with a flicked header.
Bishop-Wisdom was denied his hat-trick as his placed shot was well-saved by McFenton.
Arion Sobers-Assue – a troublesome player for Swansea University all evening – got a deserved goal to create an unassailable lead for Swansea.
Bishop-Wisdom involved again was able to find Assue in the box and the winger slotted it past McFenton.
In their final chance of the half, Bishop-Wisdom turned his snapshot just twice after deceiving McFenton by shimmying himself away from the goalkeeper.
Ferry clawed one back after a deflected shot of frustration from Mark Jones provided them with a corner.
The corner kick was flown in and Luke Martin collided with his defender after coming to claim the cross, instead the ball deflected from him to give the Reds an own goal.
Swansea were undeterred from the cheap goal they conceded.
They restored their three-goal advantage in the opening minutes of the second half.
Toms’ corner fell perfectly to the towering Johnston who scored with a bullet header.
Despite the game slowing down, the experienced Wyn Thomas almost scored with a header but for a block on the goal line.
In an attempt to reduce the deficit, Ferry substitute Harri Horwood it the post from Joe Hunt’s corner kick.
Swansea substitute Jordan Hughes was denied by McFenton as he made the time and space for himself to pull off a shot.
Sobers-Assue then hit the post after flicking on Toms’ well-delivered cross.
The Reds evening was made worse by Sam Baker’s sending off after he was shown a second yellow for taking down Jandir Zola.
Swansea University went unchallenged by the ten-men of Briton Ferry as they were able to see out a comfortable victory at Old Road.
