Former Wales international Malcolm Allen has encouraged Wrexham to join the Cymru Leagues.
The former Watford striker who is a Wrexham fan admitted he would like to see the Dragons move into the Welsh system.
Wrexham haven’t been in the Football League since 2008.
They’ve been in the fifth tier of English football for twelve seasons and two points off of the relegation zone to the sixth tier.
The lowest division Wrexham have been in was the Birmingham & District League in 1920.
“Because Wrexham have come close to getting back into the English pyramid a few times, there’s no getting away from the fact that they haven’t,” said Malcolm Allen to LeaderLive.co.uk.
“How much more can everyone take after a season that is still being threatened with the drop?
“I do see Dean Keates pulling them out of the mire this time round, but the future I would like to see for Wrexham would be for them to join the Welsh pyramid.”
Allen, 52, is a commentator for Cymru Premier matches and can be seen regularly on Sgorio.
Despite their exile, Wrexham still hold the record for winning the Welsh Cup, having won the competition 23 times.
Welsh clubs were prohibited from competing in the Welsh Cup in 1996.
They appeared in the 2011/2012 Welsh Cup alongside Merthyr Town, Newport County and Wrexham but were knocked out by Airbus UK Broughton.
Through winning the Welsh Cup, Wrexham were able to represent Wales in Europe through the Cup Winners Cup.
Allen is of the belief that should Wrexham move to the Welsh pyramid system as it could enhance their opportunity of playing in Europe.
“They could win the league, and they could become the first team from the Cymru Premier to reach the group stages of the Europa League,” added Allen.
“I don’t think it’s going to happen, but I can dream, just like most Wrexham fans do when they think they can get back into the Football League!”
