Aberystwyth Town 5-3 Airbus UK: Touray Sisay hat-trick settles eight-goal thriller
A hat-trick for Alhagi Touray Sisay was enough for Aberystwyth to claim a 5-3 win over lowly Airbus UK Broughton at Park Avenue.
The striker netted twice in the first half, with Matthew Bishop’s men cruising, only for Airbus UK Broughton defender, Kristian Platt, to halve the deficit on the stroke of half time to cast doubt in the Seasiders’ minds.
Touray Sisay’s brace was upgraded to a hat-trick in the second-half, after Marc Williams had restored the two-goal lead.
The latter bagged himself a brace with a powerful header from Wes Baynes’ free-kick to put the Seasiders 5-1 up.
Substitute Oliver Lanceley scored twice to mount a potential comeback, but the Wingmakers’ Brady McGilloway was shown a straight red card to ensure that Steve O’Shaughnessy’s men left Park Avenue empty-handed.
The Seasiders’ victory puts them eleven points above the relegation zone, and now trail in the race for the play-off spot by eight points.
Airbus UK Broughton remain under immense pressure at the foot of the JD Cymru Premier, two points behind their relegation rivals, having played a game more.
Aberystwyth came out of the blocks quickly, with striker Adam Davies, who signed from Guilsfield in January, looking a real aerial outlet for the hosts.
Davies’ knockdowns for both Paulo Mendes and Geoff Kellaway posed early chances for the Seasiders, but were denied by Airbus UK Broughton defenders’ blocks.
Aberystwyth were rewarded for their early dominance in the tenth minute, as Paulo Mendes switched the ball out to Wes Baynes; the right-back’s cross was perfect for Adam Davies to head down to Alhagi Touray Sisay.
The striker, who signed for the Seasiders in January, made no mistake in front of goal, firing past David Roberts to give his side the lead.
The hosts’ tails were up after the opener, continuing their early dominance, with Alex Pennock in goal a mere spectator.
Filling for the suspended Connor Roberts, the Aberystwyth goalkeeper played a part in the second, as his goal-kick fell to Geoff Kellaway.
The experienced winger had the vision to chip the ball over the defence for Alhagi Touray Sisay to latch onto, who chipped David Roberts to double the Seasiders’ lead.
With Matthew Bishop’s men cruising, Airbus UK Broughton pulled a goal back to put the Wingmakers back in contention.
Ryan Edwards’ initial effort was saved by Alex Pennock, only for Kristian Platt to tap home the rebound.
With the score at 2-1, Airbus UK Broughton had put themselves right back into the game.
With the Wingmakers’ tails up, the start of the second half was a much more even contest, with the fourth goal proving to be one of high significance.
Paulo Mendes went close to finding it, after a superb run from his own half, eventually forcing a fine save out of David Roberts.
After both sides knocked on the door, Geoff Kellaway picked out Marc Williams with a pinpoint cross. The latter headed past David Roberts to restore the two-goal lead.
Another new signing in Aaron Pomeyie was then introduced off the bench, and proved to be a real handful for Steve O’Shaughnessy’s men.
The winger raced through on goal within minutes of coming on, but was matched by an excellent save by David Roberts.
Alhagi Touray Sisay was, however, on hand to add the Seasiders’ fourth and bag his hat-trick.
Pomeyie was again involved, as Aberystwyth added a fifth. His direct run at the Airbus UK Broughton defence resulted in Daniel Edwards bringing him down.
Wes Baynes’ resulting free kick was headed home powerfully by Marc Williams, who secured his second of the night.
Much like the end of the first half, Aberystwyth looked to be cruising with the score at 5-1, until the introduction of substitute Oliver Lanceley.
The young striker pegged the Seasiders back twice in three minutes, racing through on goal to net his first, while the second came from a good cross from right-back Brady McGilloway.
With the score 5-3, the Wingmakers’ hopes of completing the comeback were diminished by the sending off of Brady McGilloway.
The Airbus UK Broughton right-back’s tackle on Aberystwyth captain Marc Williams was deemed to be a straight red card.
Aberystwyth held on to secure a 5-3 win in what was a frantic game at Park Avenue.
The Seasiders host Penybont in their next JD Cymru Premier fixture, while Airbus UK Broughton face a difficult trip to Cardiff Met.
