Why in-form Connah’s Quay Nomads can’t afford to miss up on title opportunity
Connah’s Quay Nomads host The New Saints at Deeside this coming Friday, in a game that could determine where the title ends up at the end of this JD Cymru Premier campaign.
Andy Morrison’s side have been excellent of late, which included winning the Nathaniel MG Cup at the start of February at Latham Park, as they recorded a 3-0 victory over Cymru South outfit, STM Sports.
They have also started Phase Two in superb style, recording victories over Barry Town United, at Jenner Park and they recently beat Caernarfon Town 4-0 at home.
The Nomads are also through to the next round of the Welsh Cup after thrashing Afan Lido 8-0 at the Deeside stadium. They will face-off against Cardiff Met in the quarter-finals of the competition at the end of this month.
The last time the Nomads tasted defeat in the league was against the New Saints, but they need to forget that result and concentrate on picking up three points on Friday evening.
If Morrison’s side win on Friday, they will move four points clear at the top of the JD Cymru Premier table, with seven games to spare.
The title is very much in the hands of the Nomads, and if they can topple the defending champions, it would be a massive statement.
The New Saints have won eight consecutive Welsh top-flight titles, but the momentum is with the Nomads, as they bid for JD Cymru Premier glory.
They have a fantastic manager in Morrison and their defence is more than capable of getting them over the line.
They have also conceded the least amount of goals in the league this season, having leaked just 17 goals in 24 games.
Nomads also possess a lot of attacking prowess going forward, too. They proved that in their latest win – over Caernarfon Town, at Deeside. George Horan scored a brace, with Craig Curran and Michael Bakare also getting in on the act for the hosts.
It was the perfect way to warm-up for this Friday’s clash, but they cannot afford to lose. If they do, then the New Saints will have the momentum to claim an unprecedented ninth title on the spin and their 14th top-flight title overall.
The Nomads are aiming to win their first league title in the Welsh top-flight.
There is still a long way to go, of course, and there is still a lot of football to be played, but Friday’s game could determine who goes on to seal the JD Cymru Premier title at the end of this season.
