An Argentine side has released a special commemorative shirt which celebrates Welsh history.
Guillhermo Brown – a second tier outfit in Argentina – have produced a shirt which could inspire a new wave of supporters from 8,000 miles away.
It is a nod to the Welsh settlers who settled in the Chubut in 1865, following Professor Michael D. Jones’s decision to establish a Welsh-speaking community away from Wales.
The Argentinian club have revealed a predominantly red shirt with green and white for the collar and sleeves, which also features a dragon similar to the FAW’s current emblem.
“To pass the quarantine we show you the third model of this season’s t-shirt.
“It is inspired by the 155th anniversary of the landing of the Welsh settlers on the coasts of Chubut to be commemorated this year.”
Welsh is spoken on the province of Chubut, which houses over 500,000 people.
Out of the 25,000 Welsh speakers in Argentina, 5000 of those come from Chubut, which is where Guillhermo are based.
Nicknamed ‘La Banda’, Guillermo Brown’s full name is ‘Guillermo Brown de Puerto Madryn’ and was named after Guillermo Brown, an Irish-born first admiral of Argentina in the mid 19th century.
Their ground ‘Estadio Raúl Conti‘ is situated in the suburb of Puerto Madryn, which once hosted a rugby international between Argentina and Wales, in which Argentina won 27-25 in 2006.
Puerto Madryn has a Welsh name of Porth Madryn and is twinned with Nefyn, a town based in the Gwynedd.
Further links to Wales, include being the former club of current Bangor City goalkeeper Gonzalo Laborda.
