Ammanford striker Lee Trundle says pitch quality should be emphasised in the FAW’s licencing criteria.

The FAW have implemented licensing criteria for the top three tiers of Welsh football.

One of the licencing requirements is to erect a specific capacity stand, depending on what division you play in.

Lee Trundle though believes that improving the quality of the pitches should be a priority.

“For a start, I’d do away with things they need round the ground,” tweeted the 43-year-old.

“Make the teams put the money into improving the pitches.

“That way the standard of football gets better and so do all the leagues.

“How many teams get a 250 gate? A lot of people just stand around the sides. Some of the pitches I’ve played on are worst that a local field.

“You don’t need that many seats. If you want the leagues to get better it has to start with the pitch.”

At the height of his game, Lee Trundle played in the EFL Championship for Bristol City and Swansea City.

Trundle who has also been involved with Llanelli, Haverfordwest County and Trefelin BGC in recent years says improving the quality of the game stems from the pitch quality.

In the Cymru Premier, 10 out of 12 clubs have an artificial surface.

The Cymru South – the division Trundle plays in – has just three in a 16 team division.

“I’ve played in all divisions of it and enjoyed every level.

“I just think the pitch situation is an easy one to implement cause you got some places and it’s impossible to play real football.

“I understand there are teams that play a certain way and don’t need a nice pitch.

“I’m not knocking that style as a wins a win but if you want a better standard of football you have to have a better standard of surface.”
