Nomads crowned Cymru Premier champions as FAW end season

Connah’s Quay have been crowned Cymru Premier champions for the first time after the current campaign was curtailed.

Multiple meetings were heard over last week and a decision has now meant a first Cymru Premier title for the Nomads. 

BBC Sport Wales say that the FAW has told them that the domestic league seasons have ended because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

A statement provided to the BBC by the FAW said: “The FAW board took into consideration the health and safety of all those involved with the leagues

“Furthermore the board also considered the specific economic and financial impact of attempting to finish the season’s urging the pandemic and therefore felt it was imperative not to risk the long term financial stability of the leagues and their clubs.

“It was also recognised that the JD Cymru Premier could not be concluded prior to the deadline set by UEFA for European competition entry.”

Connah’s Quay will take their place in Champions League qualifying as Wales’ presentative.

The New Saints finish second-placed finish see them earn a Europa League spot, alongside Bala Town and Barry Town United. 

The abandonment of the Welsh Cup sees Barry Town United qualify for European competition for the second time in a row.

Furthering on in the statement, it reads: “In accordance with UEFA guidelines, as the FAW is not able to determine a domestic cup winner on sporting merit, the highest ranked non-qualified club from the CP will qualify for the 00/01 UEL. This representative has been determined as Barry Town United.”

The final season placings in the Cymru Premier have been determined by points per game in league matches played up to March 7. 

Andy Morrison’s side held a four-point lead over The New Saints when the season was suspended, playing an equal amount of games.

The Nomads claim their second piece of silverware of the season after securing the 2019/20 Nathaniel MG Cup. 

Decisions on promotion and relegation have yet to be decided and will be decided ‘in due course’ by the FAW. 

It brings to an end eight years of dominance in the division by The New Saints having won the league every season since 2011/2012.
