Agony for Jake Cassidy and Mark Sampson as Stevenage face prospect of relegation

Welshmen Jake Cassidy and Mark Sampson face the prospect of relegation with Stevenage after a ruling went against them.

Managed by former Cardiff City striker Alex Revell, the Boro finished the season with 0.61 points per game after recording 22 points from 36 games.

Relegation rivals Macclesfield Town were deducted two points after the non-payment of players’ wages, with the decision taken by an independent panel.

A deduction of three points or more would have seen Stevenage retain their Football League status, however, it has not gone in their favour.

Chairman Phil Wallace says the club are in discussions with their legal advisors over their relegation. 

The club won just three League Two games, whilst drawing thirteen and losing twenty.

Revell’s assistant at the club is Welshman Mark Sampson.

The Creigiau-born coach started out at Taff’s Well and went on to manage England Women, before joining the coaching staff at Broadhall Way in July 2019.

Following relegation, 22 players have been released by the club, including Glan Conwy-born striker Jake Cassidy.

Cassidy, 27, began his career at youth level in the Cymru Leagues with Airbus UK Broughton and also had a prolific season at Llandudno Junction, before making the move to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The striker has since had permanent spells with Oldham Athletic, Guiseley, Hartlepool United and Maidenhead United prior to signing for Stevenage for a reported five-figure-fee in January 2020.

Cassidy made nine league appearances for the Boro, scoring once, before his release.
