The JD Cymru South ‘Team of the Season’ has this evening been announced, with players from seven different teams represented in the star-studded line-up.
The team was decided by the managers of the Cymru South, who all listed their nominees to the Cymru Leagues committee.
Cambrian and Clydach Vale goalkeeper Dan Bradley is in between the sticks. The stopper is joined by former teammate Cameron Keetch, who recently departed the Tonypandy side to link up with promoted Haverfordwest County.
Dane Williams’ side boasted the joint-second best defensive record in the league along with Swansea University, conceding just 31 goals in their 23 matches. Haverfordwest County top the standings in this area, letting in just 26 goals in their 25 games.
Partnering Keetch in a three-man defensive is Sean Pemberton and Dan Sheehan.
Pemberton, the Haverfordwest County captain, has been a rock at the back for Wayne Jones’ men, while Sheehan has proved to be a shrewd addition since joining Swansea University from Carmarthen Town in 2018.
Cambrian and Clydach Vale and Swansea University are represented in the midfield, too, with Corey Shephard and Adam Orme occupying central and right-sided roles respectively.
The pair are joined by Jordan Carey, the Taff’s Well attacking midfielder, who was a bright spark in a side which flattered to deceive for much of the season, finishing the campaign as the second highest goalscorer with 17 efforts to his name. The youngster will be plying his trade for Pontypridd Town next season.
Completing the midfield line-up is Cwmbran Celtic’s Chris Ham, another player who performed well in a team which narrowly avoided relegation from the second-tier.
The three-pronged attack consists of Mark Jones, Ben Ahmun and Marley Bishop-Wisdom.
Briton Ferry Llansawel marksman Jones was the runaway leader at the top of the goalscoring charts in the 2019-20 season, netting a remarkable 32 times, meaning he found the net more times than Undy Athletic, Cwmbran Celtic, Cwmamman United and Caerau Ely. The former Carmarthen Town man was responsible for 49% of his teams goals.
Bishop-Wisdom was a key part of the Swansea University side which scored the third most team goals (56) in the Cymru South last season.
Ahmun lead the line in excellent fashion for STM Sports, who recorded a creditable fourth-placed finish in their maiden season in the second tier. They were, however, demoted to the third tier for next season after failing to secure a licence to compete in the league.
The forward scored 11 league goals for the Mellons, and it was recently announced that he will play for Penybont in the Cymru Premier next season.
