Former Cymru Premier quartet released by Wrexham

Four Cymru Premier players have been released by Vanarama National League outfit Wrexham.

The list of departures for the English non-league outfit includes Jason Oswell, Jack Thorn, Matthew Sargent and Dawid Szczepaniak.

Oswell, 27, had spells in the Cymru Leagues with Rhyl and Airbus UK Broughton, before a prolific period with Newtown.

During his time with the Robins, the striker earned the Golden Boot in the 2016-2017 season, scoring 22 goals in 33 games and was also a part of the Newtown team that won their Europa League debut against Valletta in 2015.

Upon his departure from the Racecourse Ground, Oswell said: “Thank you to everybody involved with Wrexham football club during the last two seasons.

“It didn’t quite work out the way I wanted it to but I am extremely proud to have played for such a big club. Good luck in the future.”

Jack Thorn, 19, spent the season on loan at Newtown, making thirteen appearances for the Robins, as they finished sixth in the Cymru Premier.

18 year-old midfielder Matthew Sargent spent the season on loan at Airbus UK Broughton.

Sargent made 17 appearances for the Wingmakers as they were relegated to the Cymru North.

Former Airbus UK Broughton goalkeeper Dawid Szczepaniak signed for Wrexham in July 2019 after a successful trial period.

After half a season with the club, Szczepaniak was loaned out to Cefn Druids in January.

The former Cymru Premier quartet are joined in the list of departures by Jake Lawlor, Akil Wright, Jazzi Barnum-Bobb, Doug Tharme, Leighton McIntosh and JJ Hooper.

A club statement read, “Wrexham AFC would like to place on record its thanks to the players who are leaving us for their efforts and commitment during their time at the Racecourse, and for their sacrifice during the furlough period. We wish them well for their future careers.”
