David Cornell: Former Wales under-21 goalkeeper to leave Northampton Town

Former Wales under-21 international David Cornell has played his last game for Northampton Town after it was confirmed he will leave the club this summer.

The 29-year-old hasn’t featured since football started back-up, amid the coronavirus pandemic – and was on the bench for the Sky Bet League Two play-off final, where the Cobblers sealed promotion to League One after thrashing Exeter City 4-0 at Wembley.

The former Swansea City goalkeeper signed for Northampton Town in 2016 after joining from Oldham Athletic and has gone onto make 108 appearances in all competitions.

Cornell took to Instagram to thank everyone at the club for everything they had done for him during his time at Sixfields.

He also had loan spells at various clubs when playing for Swansea City between 2009 and 2015, at Port Talbot Town, Hereford United, St Mirren & Portsmouth.

Cornell also featured for Wales’ under-21 side between 2010 and 2012, making a total of three appearances for his country.

He will now be looking for a new challenge this summer, after not being offered a new contract by Northampton Town, it has been revealed – following the release of their retained list.

“This is the difficult part of the job,” admitted Cobblers manager Keith Curle, speaking to the club website.

“My job is to make these decisions for the betterment of the football club and to look to the future.

“First and foremost I would like to thank all of the players collectively for their efforts. I cannot speak highly enough of their attitudes and their commitment.

“As we look to the future, there has to be a continued progression and development both individually and collectively as we look to continue our journey on our upward curve.”

Nicky Adams, who is also a former Wales under-21 international, will remain at the club, after the 33-year-old midfielder was included on Northampton Town’s retained list.
