Clubs move closer to playing return after latest Welsh Government rule changes

Football clubs in Wales have moved a step closer to returning to action after today’s announcement by the Welsh Government.

The First Minister, Mark Drakeford, revealed that outdoor group activity – including team sports – will be able to restart from next Monday, 13 July.

The New Saints, Bala Town and Barry Town United are already in training after receiving permission from the Welsh Government.

The three Cymru Premier clubs, who finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively in the curtailed 2019-20 league campaign, will compete in one-legged Europa League qualifying ties next month.

As well as the top-flight league, football clubs from around the country had seen their seasons cut short because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Today’s announcement paves the way for amateur and other semi-professional clubs to return to training and organise pre-season friendly matches.

Mr Drakeford was asked for clarification when it comes to the sports which are permitted to resume under the latest guidelines.

In response, he said: “They allow low-contact sports, so football is okay.”

Those involved in the various sports that have been given the green light to return – including football – have been instructed by Mr Drakeford to consult with the respective governing bodies in order to gather relevant advice.
