Welshman Joe Jacobson played a starring role as Wycombe Wanderers edged past Oxford United to clinch promotion to the Sky Bet Championship.

The former Cardiff City man provided an assist from a corner for the Chairboys’ opening goal, before cooly slotting home a penalty with just over 10 minutes left to play.

Jacobson, a former Wales under-21 international, has played over 200 games for the Adams Park outfit, and will now have the opportunity to test himself in the second tier next season.

Gareth Ainsworth’s side took the lead when Jacobson’s corner was headed in at the far post by defender Anthony Stewart.

Oxford United, who are managed by former Caernarfon Town man Karl Robinson, levelled matters just before the hour mark when what appeared to be a cross from Mark Sykes found its way into the net from a tight angle.

Then, with 12 minutes left in normal time, Wycombe were awarded a penalty when U’s keeper Simon Eastwood brought Fred Onyadinma inside the area.

Jacobson, 33, made no mistake from the spot to score the goal which saw the Chairboys – a team who were tipped for relegation before the season began – promoted to the Championship.

Ben Woodburn, the Welsh youngster who is on loan at Oxford United from Liverpool, came on as a substitute in the 90th minute.

Another Welshman, Alex Samuel, who was born in Neath, started for Wanderers and was replaced just after the hour mark by former Swansea City striker Adebayo Akinfenwa.
