Adebayo Akinfenwa: The brilliant response former Barry Town United forward gave after earning promotion to Championship with Wycombe Wanderers

Former Barry Town United forward Abedayo Akinfenwa was in great spirits last night – as he celebrated earning promotion to the Championship with Wycombe Wanderers.

The 38-year-old, who played for Barry Town in 2003, scoring six goals in nine appearances – came off the substitutes bench in the 62nd minute of the second half, as the Chairboys beat Oxford United 2-1 at Wembley in the League One play-off final.

Delirious at the full-time whistle, the London-born forward was shocked at what Gareth Ainsworth’s side had achieved, after their league campaign was brought to a halt, due to the coronavirus outbreak.

“Tell me what we just did,” said the ecstatic forward, speaking to Sky Sports.

“I don’t think they heard you at the back, tell me what we did. First and foremost, I want to thank God, because he made the impossible, possible.

“My next story is four years ago I stood in front of you and I was technically unemployed. Let me tell you something, the only person who can hit me up on Whatsapp is Klopp, so we can celebrate together, you get me?” added the striker.

“I hope that my story shows that the only opinion that matters is the opinion that you have about yourself and I was lucky and blessed to find a manager (Gareth Ainsworth) and players that believed in me today.

“I will say it for the people at the back, Wycome is in the Championship. Wait people in the back didn’t hear me, Wycombe are in the Championship,” joked Akinfenwa.

Welsh defender Joe Jacobson scored the goal which sent the Buckinghamshire-based outfit to the Sky Bet Championship – they will be competing in the second tier of English football for the first time in their 133-year history.
