Charlton Athletic defender Tom Lockyer is close to joining Luton Town.
The 25-year-old, who is set to join up with Wales for international duty this week, is to remain in the Championship with the Hatters.
Lockyer activated a clause in his contract allowing him to leave The Valley on a free transfer.
It looks like Luton Town – managed by former Maesteg Park and Ton Pentre defender Nathan Jones – has won the race for Lockyer.
The former Bristol Rovers centre-back is to join the Kennilworth Road club on a three-year deal.
Lockyer didn’t feature in Charlton’s friendly with Crystal Palace, with Lee Bowyer explaining why: “Tom came to me yesterday and said Luton had offered him a three-year contract, so that’s where he’s going.
“I’m not surprised that someone has tried to take him. He did well for us last year and he wants to stay in and around the Welsh squad with next summer coming up, that’s what he said.
“The only thing that surprised me is it took this long for someone to try and take him.”
Lockyer’s departure frees up a place in the Charlton squad, which may be filled by former Cardiff City and Celtic defender Adam Matthews.
