A stellar second half performance secures the Robins’ first league victory of the 2020/21 season.
Both Newtown and Cefn Druids came into this evening’s sole JD Cymru Premier without a win in the JD Cymru Premier.
A fairly equal first half saw Newtown have the better chances, but Cefn Druids took the lead through a fantastic Iwan Cartwright strike.
The visitors’ lead didn’t last long, as Ryan Edwards’ 37th minute strike saw the home side snatch an equaliser before half time.
Chances for Breese could have seen Newtown enter the half with a lead, but Mike Jones in the Druids net, was equal to every effort.
Newtown were first out of the blocks in the second half, as an early headed effort by Neil Mitchell, gave Newtown the lead on 47 minutes.
The chances continued to come, as Nick Rushton saw his effort palmed away by Mike Jones.
Jamie Breese almost extended the home side’s lead, but he couldn’t turn the ball home from a fantastic Nick Rushton cross.
Druids looked deflated following the second half Newtown press, and giving away a 67th minute penalty away certainly didn’t lift the away side.
Nick Rushton slotted home from the spot, to score his first goal of the evening, and extend the Robins’ lead.
It only took another six minutes for Rushton to strike again, as he broke down the right side and slotted past Mike Jones with ease.
